Gus James White peacefully entered his eternal rest at Casey House Hospice in Rockville, Maryland on June 18, 2020.

Gus was born in Venton, Maryland on January 20, 1941 to Lillian Gray and Sylvester White, Sr.  A few years later his family moved to Salisbury, Maryland.  After graduating from Salisbury High School, Gus attended Morgan State College (now University), graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics.  After graduation, Gus started his career at The National Security Agency.  He was certified as a Cryptologist and Computer Systems Analyst.  NSA selected Gus to attend the MIT Alfred P. Sloan Fellow program, earning a Master of Science in Business. Over the course of his career at NSA, Gus was a Mathematician, Team Chief, Branch Level Manager, Legislative Staff Officer, Business Level Manager, Group Level Manager, and a Trailblazer Account Manager.   He recruited mathematicians and computer scientists for NSA where he retired after 41 years of service.

Gus loved math. He encouraged students to pursue careers in math.  For many years Gus returned to Salisbury around Christmas time to deliver Christmas gifts to children in the neighborhood where he grew up.  Each gift would include messages encouraging the children to excel in school.

After retiring and moving back to Salisbury, MD Gus was instrumental in the founding of the Eastern Shore Morgan State University Alumni Chapter.  He served as President for two terms.  In 2015 Gus was honored by Morgan State University.

Gus and his family were members of Sargent Memorial Church while residing in Forestville, MD.  He was a member of the Sargent Memorial Credit Union and he tutored students in math on Saturdays.   He was an active member of the Waterford Civic Association.  Upon returning to Salisbury, Gus and his family joined Wesley Temple United Methodist Church where he became a member of the Finance Committee and tutored students in the after-school program.   Gus volunteered his time at Choices High School after learning there was a need for math tutors.  He was active with the Salisbury High School Association and became a life member.

Gus’s life is celebrated by his wife of 51 years, Frances; his son Jonathan, his daughter-in-law Cicely, his brother Sylvester, his sister-in-law Jeanette, his mother-in-law Lillian Jones, many nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family and friends.

Gus was preceded in death by his parents Lillian and Sylvester White, Sr., three brothers, William, Joseph and Steven White; three sisters, Consquella Hollis, Gladys Hayward and Viola Hayward, and one brother-in-law Oscar Jones, Jr.

A funeral will be held on Friday, June 26, 2020 at 11 am at Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Rd., Salisbury. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.
