Obituary of Edna McCarthy


Edna Louise Handy-McCarthy was born to the late Carl and Lucresher Holbrook-Handy on December 2,1929 in Princess Anne, Maryland.  She departed this earthly life and was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 2, 2020.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Wicomico County.

She later met and married the late Kenneth J. McCarthy and from this union, six children were born. Two daughters and four sons; later she became "Mom" to six stepchildren.

 Edna’s later years were spent at home, due to her lengthy illness. Her daughter, Elizabeth McCarthy, and grandson, Lawrence Hitch were her last primary care providers, along with her son, Roscoe Handy.

She leaves to cherish loving memories; one daughter, Elizabeth McCarthy, Salisbury, Maryland, two sons, Roscoe Handy and his wife, Gwen of Cambridge, Maryland; Nathaniel McCarthy, of Denton, TX; (15) grandchildren, (10) great-grandchildren, (10) great-great grandchildren, (8) great-great-great grandchildren and a host of relatives, extended family and friends.

Edna was preceded in death by her mother and father; Carl and Lucresher Handy, daughter; Mazie Pulliam, sons; Roland Duffy and Elwood Holbrook, sisters; Sarah Duffy and Leslie Jones, and brother, James Holbrook.

A viewing will be held Thursday, May 7, 2020, 6:00-8:00pm at  the Stewart Funeral Home by Holloway & Downey, P.A. Due to restrictions on gatherings, guests may view in groups of seven or less. Graveside Services and Interment will be held at John Wesley United  Methodist Church Cemetery, Princess Anne, MD. Guests may also leave condolences at www.thestewartfuneralhome.com.
