Obituary of Matthew Jr.
Matthew was born Matthew Jones, Jr. on January 7, 1937 here in Wicomico County. He was the fifth child of Matthew and Sarah Jones. They lived in this community their entire lives.
He went to the county schools graduating from Salisbury High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force serving as an Air Policeman. Later, he pursued automotive mechanical training in Phildelphia, Pennsylvania, then trained in Washington, DC in barbering and cosmetology.
Upon licensing, he went to work as a barber in Martin's Barber Shop, his brother-in-law. Over the years, Matthew also worked for the United Parcel Service from which he retired after 27 years of service. There he was recognized, awarded, and honored by being inducted into the prestigious "Circle of Honor" having amassed a 20-year safe driving record.
In 1963, Matthew was reacquainted with Shirley and they were married two years later. Eventually, they had one son, Ivan Lamont. Matthew and Shirley celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in August of 2018.
Matthew was very active in the Saint James Church men's fellowship, his neighborhood civic association, and a local eatery social group. He devoted many hours with those who pursued the playing of one of his favorite card games "Pinochle."
Throughout his recent illness, he remained the proverbial jokester with something quick and witty to say to every and anyone, including those professionals who attended to his care who fell in love with him. There was always a ready and full smile to greet you.
Matthew was a remarkably hardworking, fun-loving person. He was a person of great devotion and love. Above all, he believed in family, friends, and faith.
