Obituary of Sylvester Raymond Gordy, Sr.

Sylvester Raymond Gordy, Sr. of Salisbury, Maryland, known to many as “Sly” and to his family as “Butch” went home to be with God on Monday, November 26, 2018 after a lengthy stay at Peninsula General Regional Medical Center.

Sylvester was born December 1, 1952 to Gracie Maybelline Gordy. He was educated in the Wicomico County School System, graduating from Wicomico Sr. High School in 1971. After graduation he attended Cortez Peters School of Business where he graduated with honors.

In October of 1974 he joined the United States Air Force where he served for almost 17 years as a Inventory Management Specialist. Sylvester received several medals and ribbons, i.e. National Defense Medal.

While in the air force he met Yvonne Petties and on October 26, 1985 they were married. To this union 2 beautiful children were born, Kimberly Nicole and Sylvester Jr.

Having been raised to believe in God, Sylvester has been a member of Seventh Tabernacle Bethel all his life, being immersed in his teen years. Until his health prevented him, he was an active member of the choir where he sang bass.

As a veteran Sylvester was an active member of the Salisbury VFW located on West Main Street and could often be found there on a Saturday night doing what he loved, dancing the night away.

After more than 14 years of battling with his illness, Sylvester went home to be with his 2 brothers, Michael and Reginald who preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Kimberly Nicole, his son Sylvester Jr., 6 grandchildren, Jazmin, Tyshawn, Jayden, Michael, and India and Imani, his mother Gracie Maybelline Gordy, his sister Jennifer Hill (Elder James Hill, Sr.), a brother Bryan Wright, a step sister Amanda Legon Maith, a step brother Ivan Tilghman, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and 2 special “aunts” Dorothy and Beatrice Parker.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 12 noon at the New Life Seventh Day Adventist Church, 29119 Adventist Dr., Salisbury, MD. A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 from 5-7 pm at the Stewart Funeral Home by Holloway and Downey on West Rd. in Salisbury. Interment will be held on Monday, December 3, 2018 at 11 am at the Eastern Shore Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock.
