Obituary of Barbara Gayle

Barbara Lee Gattis Gayle, the daughter of the late Pauline Gattis and Benjamin “Bigs” Wilson, was born on April 21, 1937 in the community of Head-Of-Creek, where she was also raised by her grandparents, Emma and Ernest “Ware” Gattis following the early demise of her mother.  She received her formal education in Wicomico County where she attended elementary school in Quantico, and was among the first graduating class of 1955 from the former Salisbury High School.

On May 5, 1960, Barbara and the love of her life, Walter Russell “Snooks” Gayle were joined in Holy Matrimony and lived out their vows “Till Death Do Us Part” when Walter entered eternal rest after 53 years of marriage on August 1, 2013.  During her husband’s military career with the United States Army, she enjoyed traveling with him to France and living in several states within the United States before returning to the Eastern Shore where they settled prior to his retirement.

Barbara Lee was an enthusiastic person of many skills who took great pride in her every achievement.  For several years, she was the business administrator for the late Jim Weatherly, managing The Postal Card Restaurant and Salisbury Battery.  She and her husband, owned and operated the Burger Master Drive-In and managed The Burger Master Eagles Softball team.  In the latter years of her employment, she served as a crew chief supervisor at Wendy’s fast foods and retired from the dietary department at Deer’s Head Hospital Center in 2003.

She was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 10159 Ladies Auxiliary and St. James Free Methodist Church (the former St. James A.U.M.P. Church), where she accepted Christ in her life and was baptized under the leadership of the Rev. Annette Wilson.  Barbara was a loyal steward to her church and family serving on the building fund committee, offering a helping hand wherever needed; and also worked with her cousins in planning the Gattis Family’s Annual Reunions.

On the morning of October 17, 2018, Barbara received her healing and victory over cancer in Glory; where she was reunited with her husband, Walter, parents, Pauline and Benjamin, grandparents, Emma and Ware, and her best friend who was like a sister to her, Agnes Jones.

Those who remain to cherish the memories of her life and love are her son, Michael (Shelley) Gayle; step-daughters, Regina Morris and Yesell (Warren) McArthur; one Godson, Samuel Whittington, III; several step grandchildren, great grands; one sister, Leslie Wilson; two sisters-in-law, Betty (Roosevelt) Palmer and Lillie Wright; two good friends and confidants, Vivan Nutter and Edith Crew; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at 11:00 am at the St. James Free Methodist Church in Head-Of-Creek with a visitation one hour prior to the service.  Interment will follow at the church cemetery.  Officiating will be Pastor Louis Reid.
