Obituary of Robert Jerome Martin
Robert Jerome Martin, son of the late Nattie Mitchell, was born in Tifton, Georgia on December 14, 1930. He transitioned this life on Friday, August 3, 2018 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland surrounded by family and friends.
Robert completed his formal schooling in Baltimore, Maryland before permanently settling in Salisbury, Maryland. He was the owner of Circle Cab and drove truck for many years for Perdue Farms and William P. Hearne Produce Company; acquiring the handle “Rocking Robin.”
After retiring from truck driving, he was employed with the MAC Center (Maintaining Active Citizens), The Joseph House and served as a Commissioner for Wicomico County Housing Authority.
Robert was a devout and loyal member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Quantico, Maryland. He served faithfully in several capacities including President of the Trustee Board, Chairman of Family and Friends Day, Member of United Methodist Men, the Usher Board and the Voices United Choir. Robert was also instrumental in the planning and the construction of the new sanctuary.
Robert Martin was a devoted husband, father, grand-father, great grand-father, brother, uncle and genuine friend. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Sherri Coley of Atlanta, Georgia. One grandson Deshawn Mitchell of Atlanta, Georgia. One granddaughter Yuri Caldwell, and 5 great grandchildren.
From his union with Viola Amelia Hull Deshields Martin, who procee
ded him in death, he leaves to mourn four sons, Herschel Stanford Deshields Jr. (Janice) of Millville, New Jersey, Marvin Deshields Sr. (Linda) of Salisbury, Maryland, Hilton Deshields Sr. (Debbie) of Salisbury, Maryland and Douglas Deshields Sr. (Elise) of Salisbury, Maryland, 20 grandchildren, 47 great grands, and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Robert also leaves to mourn a brother, Wilbur Martin of Nokomis, Florida, a sister, Ruth Harris of Nokomis, Florida and one god-daughter, Patricia Morton Harrison of Salisbury, Maryland.
Robert was loved and respected by everyone he came in contact with and was fondly called “Pop” by many in the community. His village of friends was like none other, he cherished and appreciated them all. Special thanks from the family goes to James Ward, Philmore and Jean White, Charles Collins, James and Nellie Hayman, Jeanette Mitchell, Elmer and Eunice Timmons, Dr. Faye Wilson, Pastor Deangelo Johnson, Delores “Froggie” Church, Rosetta Dennis, and Selina Johnson.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 11 am at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Quantico, MD. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
