Obituary of Earl Birckhead

Earl L. Birckhead died at his home on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 in Salisbury, Maryland. Born on November 23, 1921, in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Howard H. and Florina Birckhead. His wife was the late Jean Pinkett Birckhead.

Earl retired after 36 years from Chesapeake Potomac phone company, where he was the first Black lineman.  He graduated from the former Salisbury Colored High School. He served three, years in the Army. He is the last musician during the big band era. He played at Alpine Room in Johnny & Sammy’s with the late Earl and Maude Robinson.

He is survived by two daughters, Mona Lisa Warren (Robert) and Lana Roberts (Wendell) of Salisbury; and step-son Patrick Pinkett (Rose), of Sharptown; a grandson, whom he raised, John Cottingham, and when John retired after 15 years in the Navy, he was the constant caregiver of his grandfather; he is also survived by three other grandchildren, Lauren Roberts of Riverdale, MD, Troy Cottingham, of Tooele, UT and Anthony Cottingham, of Fruitland, several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren: a son-in-law, Robert Lee Warren; two sister-in-laws, Roxie Evans and Monterey Raynor, of Salisbury, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11 am at Stewart Funeral Home by Holloway and Downey PA, 821 West Rd., Salisbury, MD. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
