Obituary of William Madison Pender, Sr.

William Madison Pender, Sr., entered into this life November 2, 1922. He was the last child born to the late, Eulus and Mattie Sturghall Pender. His brothers Archie, Homer and Carl, and sister, Eldora Pender Davis all preceded him in death.


William was baptized at an early age and joined Liberty Baptist Church in Dalton, Georgia. He was a faithful and hard-working member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church. For many years he was active in various organizations at Metropolitan United Methodist Church. He loved music and played for the Men’s Chorus and the Senior Choir.


He attended School in Dalton and graduated from Emery Street High School. He matriculated at Morris Brown College for one year and was drafted. He served in the Army during World War II. After an honorary discharge from the service, he matriculated at Morehouse College, received a Bachelor of Science Degree in June of 1947. In 1949, he earned a Master’s Degree from New York University and in 1957 an Ed. D from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas.


William started his career at Florida Industrial Institute, Mariana, Florida as an educator, held various positions at Jarvis Christian College, Hawkins, Texas. He continued his career at Jackson State College, now Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi. He joined the staff in 1965 at Maryland State College now the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, Maryland, where he retired June of 1987 and was Professor Emeritus.


Professional affiliations included the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Pi Alpha Chapter and Gamma Theta Boule’.


Survived and to cherish fond memories are his wife of 67 years, Minnie Lee Marshall Pender. To this union three devoted children were born, daughter, Audra Patricia Pender of East Point, Georgia; sons, William M. Pender, Jr. and Larry Jerome Pender of Salisbury. Two grandchildren, Jordan Alexandria and Taylor Jonai of Mitchellville, Maryland; sisters-in-law, Vivian S. Pender of Canton, Ohio, Hazel Dixon of Berkeley, California, Emma Hampton of Waukegan, Illinois; brother-in-law, James (Annette) Marshall of Waukegan, Illinois and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.


A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Ella Fitzgerald Center. Interment will take place on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at West Hill Cemetery in Dalton, Georgia.
