Ralph Laurence Elsey, Sr. departed this life on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at his home in Nanticoke, Maryland.  He was the 3rd of seven children born on February 8, 1930 to the late Thomas and Melanie Nutter Elsey.


Laurence, as he was called, was educated in Wicomico County schools, graduating from Salisbury Colored High School.  He was employed by Coldwater Seafood and later by H.B. Kennerly and Son.  He was always a farmer and water-man at heart.


Laurence was proud to serve the people of the Westside Community.  He was on the Board of Directors for Shore Up, Inc., operated the Westside Food Bank and was a member of the Lions Club.  He was a Lay Servant at the Asbury UM Church; a chaplain at Deer's Head Hospital Center and Genesis Nursing Home.  He loved singing in the choirs at Asbury and at the Westside Charge.  He was a spiritual person who loved the Lord and was always ready to share a Word about the Lord. 


His favorite past-time was playing Pinochle and “beating” Elise's behind.


Precious memories will forever be held by his four daughters – Shirley (Al) Brown, Peggy Chase, Linda Roberts, and Elise (Douglas) Deshields; his son Thomas (Dorothy) Elsey; 1 sister – Ruth Bush, 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, 2 adopted children – Morris “Billy Boy” White, Robert Perry, 2 sisters-in-law: Thelma Martin and Genevieve Jones; 2 brothers-in law: Matthew (Shirley) Jones and Bobbie Fort, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  Also, a special thank you to his caregivers Michael Brown and Jacinta Allen.


Ralph Laurence Elsey, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Melanie Elsey, his devoted wife of 64 years Mary Hilda Jones Elsey, 1 son Ralph Elsey, Jr., 1 son-in-law Joseph Chase, Sr., 3 sisters:  Francis Kelley, Doris Jones, and Addie Fort, 2 brothers Ralph Jones and Samuel Elsey, as well as 1 adopted daughter Rev. Anna McIntosh.


A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11 am at Nanticoke UM Church, 20485 Nanticoke Rd., Nanticoke, MD 21840.  A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Officiating will be Rev. Zac Wheeler.
