Charlotte Georgia Maddox Gates was compassionate and gentle. Her kindness and optimism with a calm-and-easygoing personality made her a favorite among family and community members, friends and her students.
This angel, born February 7, 1927 in Princess Anne, Maryland to the late Walter Joseph Maddox, Sr. and Laura Parsons Maddox, passed peacefully in her sleep of old-age complications on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at home and surrounded by her loving daughters and grandson. She did it her way at age 90.
Known affectionately by siblings and childhood neighbors as “Sis,” Charlotte was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and aunt, as well as an early childhood education teacher whose extended family included hundreds of students and many colleagues at Deal Island and Dames Quarter elementary schools where she served three decades.
Charlotte was loved by family and friends and respected by church, civic and professional associates who knew her sense of compassion, dedication to causes and projects, her sense of humor and benevolent and gentle nature.
She joined Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Princess Anne, Md., at a very young age and was a lifelong member.
Charlotte served over the years on numerous community and church committees including the Somerset County Library System Board of Trustees. She also was a past member of Links, Inc.,
Charlotte attended Somerset County public schools and what is now the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in her hometown. She completed undergraduate studies in elementary education at Bowie State University and graduate studies at what is now Salisbury University.
Charlotte began her teaching career in 1963 at the former Dames Quarter Elementary in Somerset County. The bulk of her career was spent at the county’s Deal Island Elementary, from where she retired in 1993. After retirement, Charlotte taught a few years at Deal Island.
In 1951, Charlotte and James Leon Gates of Easton, Md., were wed, a union that produced two daughters, Joyce Ann and Deborah Lee Gates.
Favorite pastimes included attending or hosting gatherings for family and friends, traveling, seeing Broadway plays and working crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed playing guitar in her earlier years. Her favorite trips were to destinations in California, Las Vegas, The Bahamas, Grand Canyon, Puerto Rico and Niagara Falls.
The apple of her eye was her only grandson, Jon Leon, who lived with her since his birth.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, James Leon Gates; her parents, Walter and Laura Maddox; siblings Ann Maddox Wilson, Grace Maddox Hatcher, Walter "Buddy" Maddox, Jr. and Douglas Jackson Maddox; and beloved nephews John and Singleton Wilson, who she regarded as sons.
She is survived by daughters, Joyce and Deborah Gates of Princess Anne, Md; grandson Jon Leon Gates of Princess Anne; a special cousin, Barbara Deshield Johnson of Duluth, Ga; brother-in-law, Francis W. Gates of Denton, Md; sister-in-law Geraldine Gates of Randallstown, Md.; her nephew John's widower, Bonnie Wilson of Washington, D.C.; nephew Charles James of Salisbury, Md.; and several nieces, cousins and good friends.
Services are Saturday, Jan. 20, at Metropolitan United Methodist Church on William P. Hytche Boulevard in Princess Anne. A viewing is 11 a.m. with funeral at noon. Interment is 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22 at Richard Memorial Park in Easton, Md.
