The Master suddenly turned the final page in the book of life for Dorothy Collins Smith on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Dorothy was born in Westover, MD on December 5, 1933. She was one of eight children born to the late David F. Collins and Pearl Curtis Collins.
She received her formal education in the public schools of Somerset County. She was a 1951 graduate of the former Greenwood High School in Princess Anne. Upon graduation Dorothy furthered her studies at Bowie State University receiving a B.S. Degree in Middle School Education. Dot, as she was fondly called, did other studies to receive her master’s equivalency.
Her teaching career spanned from Somerset County, St. Mary’s County, Worcester County and finally Eastern Shore Correctional Institute, retiring after 33 years of service to the state of Maryland.
She had been a lifelong member of St. James United Methodist Church and later worshipped at the Church of the Brethren.
Dorothy was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Robert Thomas Smith. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin.
Dorothy’s survivors, include: one son, Darryl Steven (Stephanie) Smith; one granddaughter, the love of her life, Donya; two grands by marriage, Sasha and Alonzo; one great grand by marriage, Taylynn; and two brothers, David (Inge’) Collins and Curtis (Patricia) Collins, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, extended family, and frineds.
One son, Robert Smith; five sisters: Lelia Maddox, Pearl Eleanor Covington, Hazel Johnson, Lydia Miles and Ethel Fosque preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held Friday, October 13, 2017 at 11:00 am at Greenhill Church of the Brethren with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in St. James United Church Cemetery in Westover.
