Ms. Mary H. Townsend, daughter of the late George W. and Mary E. Townsend was born in Fruitland, Maryland on July 15, 1931. She completed her transition from this world into God’s heavenly arms peacefully in the early morning hours on Saturday, August 5, 2017 in her home surrounded by her family. She was 86 years old.
“Ms. Hester or Mommom” as she was affectionately known to everyone in the community lived all of her life in Fruitland and received her formal education in the Wicomico County school system. After her schooling, she went on to work as a factory worker at Swift and Company and Shoreland Freezer. During that time frame, her mother became ill so she ceased working to care for her mother full-time until her mother passed in 1976. Following her mother’s passing, she went on to open a daycare center where she cared for the neighborhood children as well as some of her grandchildren. Finally, she went back to work for Perdue Farms around 1979 where she retired in 1993. She has been a pillar in the Fruitland community and has always been known for helping and caring for others. Her many roles have included: mothering, day care provider, adult care provider, companion and friend, tax-preparer, gardener, cook, and most importantly, a child of God. She leaves a legacy of memories that demonstrates humility, compassion and strength throughout her life that shall live on.
Ms. Mary Hester Townsend leaves to mourn: seven children, James Allen (Fruitland, Maryland), Brenda Jones (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), George Allen (Salisbury, Maryland), Rose Allen (Fruitland, Maryland), Martha Allen (Fruitland, Maryland), Sammy Allen (Fruitland, Maryland), and Vicky Liggett (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania); 16 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and loved ones. She also leaves precious memories with two longtime friends, Mrs. Marilyn Leatherbury and Mrs. Gladys Cannon, both of Fruitland. She was preceded in death by all of her sisters and brothers, Viola T. Gordon, Beatrice Gilbert, Ruth Gilbert, Martha Townsend, Benjamin Townsend, Douglas Townsend, and Linwood Townsend.
