Martie Mae Church Dashiell, 80, was born on April 20, 1937 in Salisbury, Maryland to the late Harry T. and Hazel Burris Church. Martie peacefully departed from this life on July 28, 2017 at her home in Delmar, Maryland surrounded by her beloved family.
Martie received her formal education at Salisbury High School where she graduated in 1955. Upon graduating from high school, she attended Bowie State College. Martie also attended the University of California in San Diego, where she completed a course in Teaching Disadvantaged Pre-School Children.
On December 24, 1958, Martie married Sergeant Major Donald J. Dashiell, Sr..
After traveling abroad at various Marine duty stations, Martie held several jobs. She began her career for the Wicomico County Board of Education as the first black Special Education Aide, where her area of expertise was Arts and Crafts. Martie most loved being a den mother, sewing, gardening, and was the best cook this side of the Eastern Shore. She could “make an old boot taste good”.
Martie was an active member of VFMA #10159, where she was the chairperson on various committees during her service.
Martie enjoyed family gatherings, flowers, and vegetables, flea market adventures, and her “Christmas Day Brunch”, which took weeks to prepare for.
She never met a stranger and always was ready to feed anyone. She made people feel loved and accepted. She always welcomed her grandchildren to stay with her. If you knew her you could not help but to love her.
Out of Martie’s and Donald’s union, 4 sons were born, known respectfully as “Martie’s Boy’s”; Donald, Jr., Reginald, Trent (Centia), and Roland (Jorgette); 4 grandchildren, Candice, Brandon (Jessica), Marcel, Donald, III (Aisia); 6 great grandchildren, Zyan, Jaylin, Janiah, Trinity, Kai’Mere, and Jymire.
She leaves behind 2 brothers and 4 sisters, Harry, Edward (Velverline), Verdelle (Clifton), Sands, Annabelle (Seldon), Dix, Jane Burkhead, and Carolyn Scott-Moore; 3 sister-in-law’s, Jean Church, Mary Jane Jones and Vivian McCullough, and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald, Sr.; brother, George “Pete” Church; brother-in-law’s, Ronald Wilson, Robert Burkhead, Howard “Teet” Wilson; and sister-in-law, Shirley Gladden.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 1:00pm at the Union United Methodist Church on Pine Street in Delmar, MD. There will be a visitation 2 hours prior to the service. Officiating will be Pastor James Young. Interment will follow at the Church Family Cemetery in Delmar.
